1000 innovative clean energy solutions and > 150 framework enablers with the potential to deliver more than twelve gigatonnes of avoided emissions by 2030

These assessments are based on a basic avoided emission assessment. The overall concept of avoided emissions is that a solution (product or service) enables the same function to be performed with significantly less GHG emissions. The method of measuring avoided emissions, is to compare a baseline scenario without the enabling solution, with a scenario using the enabling solution; whereby the baseline represents the ‘business as usual’ (BAU) scenario.

These assessments are based on the framework document: The Avoided Emissions Framework (AEF) from September 2020

Enabling global plastic recycling

Enabling global plastic recycling

PlasTell wrote: The numerous types of visually identical but chemically different plastics must be separated and recycled separately. Many developed countries use industrial-scale automatic sorting machines, however their high capital cost and infrastructural requirements prohibit their use in developing countries. Instead, developing countries make use of numerous small manual sorting facilities distributed around the country which are extremely limited by their workers' ability to visually identify plastics. We have developed a low-cost and small scale plastic identification device which enables operators in material recovery facilities to quickly and reliably identify different types of visually indistinguishable plastics... Grain storage monitoring

Grain storage monitoring

Crover wrote: Cereal grains are the basis of staple food, yet post-harvest losses during long-term storage are exceptionally high, above 20%, making storage the single phase from harvest to final product with the highest losses. This is responsible for about 6% of total greenhouse gas emissions from food waste. Crover is the first robotic device able to ‘swim’ through grains stored in bulk and autonomously monitor their conditions, helping grain operators like farmers and grain merchants maintain the quality of their stock... BioKind

BioKind

BioKind wrote: Aquaculture production in europe has increased 60% since 1998, but these farmed animals need to eat lots of protein. This traditionally comes from wild fish (fishmeal), but 90% of fish stocks are fully or over exploited. To meet demand, many thousands of hectares of soybeans have been planted globally, resulting in widespread deforestation in brazil. Through our innovative, proprietary process, we upcycle non-edible crop waste into a high-protein feed ingredient. We are valorizing a waste product to make agricultural land more efficient, and stop the expansion of other destructive protein ingredients... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad

Affordable growth media for cultivated meat

Affordable growth media for cultivated meat

Multus Media wrote: At multus media we create the key ingredient to make cultivated meat affordable and profitable. Cultivated meat is a new way of producing real meat without the animal by only growing the muscle and fat tissues that directly make up the final meat product. Producing meat this way releases up to 87% fewer greenhouse gases than conventional meat, uses just a fraction of the land and water, and requires zero antibiotics. A critical challenge in the cultivated meat industry is cost of production. Growth media, which traditionally uses animal blood serum, accounts for more than 80% of production costs. We create animal-free serum replacements that promote cell growth without expensive nutrients... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad

GoGreenExperts wrote: The problem: there are products marketed as “green” in most uk consumer segments, but some products are much greener than others. The companies providing the environmentally superior offerings struggle to get this message to consumers. . Our solution: a green product star rating system (like defaqto in the uk insurance market). We will become a trusted, independent, household name in providing green consumer advice. . Why now: there has been a large (and continuing) shift in consumer sentiment in the past 18 months. Many consumers now want to be sure they are making the right purchasing decisions for the environment, but there are no independent experts focussed on helping them make those decisions. ... Helping families to tackle climate change

Skoopr wrote: With a skoopr on the wall of the house, teenagers see the carbon footprint of their family's energy use fall. Skoopr collects air hitting the house to feed a high speed generator that is optimised for low speed and turbulent urban wind conditions. With school strikes for climate and rising guilt about holiday flights, conversations around the kitchen table in homes across europe are heating up. Treeconomy

Treeconomy wrote: We use high quality remote sensing (drone-based lidar or satellite imagery) to exactly quantify tree growth and therefore carbon captured. Land owners pay us for this service, and in return we quantify carbon sequestered on their land, package it financially, and sell it directly to companies who need to offset emissions (such as the aviation sector). We bring science and rigour to the carbon offset market, as well as smart database technology to avoid double counting. Our offset-as-a-service is entirely innovative in this space...
