1000 innovative clean energy solutions and > 150 framework enablers with the potential to deliver more than twelve gigatonnes of avoided emissions by 2030

These assessments are based on a basic avoided emission assessment. The overall concept of avoided emissions is that a solution (product or service) enables the same function to be performed with significantly less GHG emissions. The method of measuring avoided emissions, is to compare a baseline scenario without the enabling solution, with a scenario using the enabling solution; whereby the baseline represents the ‘business as usual’ (BAU) scenario.

These assessments are based on the framework document: The Avoided Emissions Framework (AEF) from September 2020

GROW (Green Roof Optimisation Worklab)

GROW (Green Roof Optimisation Worklab)

GROW wrote: Grow is a first-of-a-kind proposed urban rooftop garden and ecological and social lab in the heart of nicosia’s old town. The project will consist of a prototype urban container garden, with possible aquaponic elements. We intend to grow both organic food for local consumption, herbs and other plants essential for biodiversity and improving air quality. We will attempt to create smart garden and the entire project will be hooked up into a real-time data-tracking system. The prototype will also contain different solar arrays, water harvesting systems and composting facilities. We also hope to attract bees to create urban beehives through our choice of flowers and pollen... Source: EIT Climate KIC's Climathon

Reusable, ethical, washable bamboo clothes

Reusable, ethical, washable bamboo clothes

Over the Moon wrote: Promotes self sufficiency - we will enable women to become self sufficient by using pads instead of relying on disposables. Pads are cheap, comfortable, reliable and last for years. Real environmental benefits - using pads lowers flood risk by cutting down on blocked sewers caused by sanitary waste. Landfill is reduced as sanitary towels are unrecyclable and take thousands of years to degrade. Bamboo is sustainable and uses less water than cotton. Socially responsible - we will lead the way by promoting the use of washables by working with girls and boys in schools to encourage them to talk about periods and raise awareness. We will help girls missing education by donating pads to those most in need... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad

Harvesting green energy from ocean waves

Harvesting green energy from ocean waves

Waves4Power (W4P) has created a wave power system able to survive the toughest possible conditions. The system’s surface installation makes it easy to service; and it can be placed nearly anywhere. All the components in W4P’s solution are commonly available and well-tested, making the solution inexpensive and cost-effective to maintain and service. In addition to the development of the power system. The solution can be applied to varius sectors, such as providing the fish farming industry and oil platforms with green power and energy supply to off-grid locations.

Bike Tree

Bike Tree

Bike Tree wrote: Our idea is to raise the awareness of the population about the bicycle as a sustainable mean of transport. More and more people are willing to use their bicycles instead of their cars. However, they often do not dare to use their e-bikes or expensive bicycles, as there is a high risk of bicycle theft in large cities. The bike tree is a secure and environmentally friendly bike storage system. Also, it increases the quality and livability of a city by bringing open space with green by nature inspired designs... Sustainable energy from nitrogen

Sustainable energy from nitrogen

greeNergy wrote: Greenhouse gas emissions, especially n2o emissions, are emitted by treating the residues of biogas processes. Recent studies have revealed that n2o emissions contribute to approximately 6% to the global climate change and are potentially the main contributor to the ozone depletion of the 20th century. The greenergy process combines intentional n2o production from biogas production residues, subsequent harvesting and combustion with biogas. As a result, clean water and green energy from n2o combustion ultimately make the biogas production a more self-sufficient and clean technology... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad

From tomato peels to bioresin

From tomato peels to bioresin

Tomapaint wrote: The core of the project is the development of a natural bio-resin obtained from industrial tomato processing by-products (skins), to be applied on the internal and external surfaces of metal cans for foodstuffs in substitution of the standard oil-based resins. Tomapaint meets the demand for sustainable production and for the safeguarding of consumer health, at the same time increasing the competitiveness of the metal cans industry, valorizing the wastes produced by the preserved industry and reducing refuse. The highly innovative eco-friendly packaging is less dangerous for consumer health with less risk of contamination and is able to compete with other packaging materials, such as bioplastics... Our mission is to create a huge community of “steppers” to reduce significantly the impact of co2 emissions caused by individual cars. Those rewards would come from our partners, that will be sustainable local commerces, and we aim to promote them through our application... Source: EIT Climate KIC's Climathon

Biodegradable, compostable laminate film

Biodegradable, compostable laminate film

LAM'ON wrote: Paper and plastic is usually not recycled once mixed together because water is used to break down paper and heat can be used to split down plastic. Furthermore most plastic coated papers are not suited to composting, but do variously end up in compost bins, sometimes even legally so. In this case, the remains of the non-biodegradble plastics components form part of the global microplastics waste problem. It would be so much easier, cheaper and faster if we had a truly biodegradable coating. Lam'on set out to develop a biodegradable and compostable laminating film in order to replace the plastic one, used in the printing industry. We want to change the way we think of printed media and upgrade the way we use and reuse it... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad
