1000 innovative clean energy solutions and > 150 framework enablers with the potential to deliver more than twelve gigatonnes of avoided emissions by 2030
These assessments are based on a basic avoided emission assessment. The overall concept of avoided emissions is that a solution (product or service) enables the same function to be performed with significantly less GHG emissions. The method of measuring avoided emissions, is to compare a baseline scenario without the enabling solution, with a scenario using the enabling solution; whereby the baseline represents the ‘business as usual’ (BAU) scenario.
These assessments are based on the framework document: The Avoided Emissions Framework (AEF) from September 2020
Koba wrote: Koba stands for compact backpack and accessories. Kobag will be our first product, an innovative backpack with a thermal base for easy storage of food and drinks. We believe that this new feature will help reducing per-capita food waste, making it easier for the everyday worker to bring food from home. Indeed, our backpack aims to blend together the best qualities of a fashionable backpack (captivating design and ease of transport) with the ones of a cool bag (thermal food and drinks isolation). Finally, consistently with our green vision, all our products will be made of eco-friendly materials, thus further reducing our ecological footprint... Source: EIT Climate KIC's ClimateLaunchPad

Connected online communication services provide the means to work across geographies and between businesses seamlessly. This allows employees to use internal systems and connect with colleagues remotely, including from their own home, reducing commuting. Emission savings are achieved through avoiding commuter travel in either cars, trains or buses. Online meeting technology also allows internal and external meetings to be conducted between multiple persons without the need for all people to be physically present in the same place. The use of cameras, screens and smart meeting rooms avoids the need for business travel to the meeting location. The impact of avoided business travel can be significant if air travel is prevented. Current avoided emissions calculated per year (2018). https://www.verizon.com/about/sites/default/files/corporate-responsibility-report/2018/environment/efficiency.html

It is a platform that incentivizes home owners who have a potential roof and financial means to install solar panels. It is based on a referral system which rewards current solar panels owners to act as the psychological push (“a technological evangelist”) to change people’s mind on buying solar panels, and push them to act. It’s much easier to go for a coffee with a friend that you trust rather than having to research for yourself on the internet and trying to motivate yourself to act on something that you’re not an expert in... Counting Carbon wrote: Food accounts for approximately 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Taking a number of important factors into account, counting carbon generates a relative score for each food product so that the consumer can easily choose the food products that are best for the environment. Dematerialisation reflects the move to a more digital society enabled through digital communication, replacing physical objects with digital and on-line equivalents. This also includes reduction in personal travel by moving to on-line transactions. The avoided carbon emissions include: the reduction in embodied carbon from the de-materialisation of CDs, DVDs, games, books, newspapers and mail; and transport emissions savings from personal travel reductions associated with shopping (these savings are offset to a certain extent by an increase in courier/delivery travel emissions). BT developed a methodology to quantify the carbon benefits associated with super-fast broadband (fibre-optic residential internet access), which is driving the uptake of digital distribution of goods and services. Current avoided emissions calculated to 0.307 tCO2 per annum per residential fibre broadband connection (2018). https://www.btplc.com/Digitalimpactandsustainability/Tacklingclimatechange/Ourmethodology/index.htm

Farmers can use Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) as a more efficient method of rice cultivation. This involves allowing fields to dry down between floods on rice fields. By decreasing the amount of time fields remain flooded, AWD reduces water use, fuel and electricity use for running irrigation pumps, and the need for nitrogen fertilizers, while also slowing down the anaerobic activity that creates methane gas. However, AWD can be challenging. It requires farmers to control water levels carefully across large tracts of land. It also introduces risk to the rice crops, as it can be difficult to assess depth accurately with only a few measurements at various points in the fields. Together, these barriers have slowed adoption of AWD. AT&T connectivity enables water-level data to be remotely collected and connected to pumping systems to automatically control the water level in the rice fields. This helps both with the implementation of the AWD process and with the data collection required for verification of the carbon credits. Thus the technology helps to overcome barriers to implementation and increases the AWD adoption rate. Current avoided annual emissions calculated based on adoption of IoT-enabled AWD expanded to all rice farmers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas. http://about.att.com/content/dam/csr/otherpdfs/10x-Precision-King-FINAL.pdf
